The title 3Do is a reference to Samdo Garak (삼도가락), a traditional Korean percussion suite that combines rhythms from three Do, which means ‘provinces’: Jeolla-do, Gyeongsang-do, and Chungcheong-do. Each province contributes distinct rhythmic styles and gestures, and Samdo performances showcase regional contrast and unity through dynamic transitions and rhythmic layering. This trio composition draws inspiration from this form, adapting the essence of Samdo Garak into a Western concert setting with the most common classical percussion instrument. Although not traditionally part of Samdo, the arranger added the 7 beat Chilchae rhythm to enrich the texture and momentum of the piece. Its asymmetry offers contrast and rhythmic propulsion.
