Cracks in the Pavement is my first work for chamber ensemble. The piece is meant to capture the mundane feeling of traveling through life while mentally elsewhere. The piece is broken into six sections with each section beginning with a line from the poem below:
Cracks in the pavement like shattered glass or a black windows web
Greet me each day, constant and unchanging.
Seasons change, leaves descend,
Snow caresses the pavement filling the fractures with frost.
Spring causes the ice to dissipate.
The pavement is constant. You are not.
Each line of the poem is sonically captured through extended techniques on marimba and voice.
