When I was in high school, I bought a kalimba because of its beautiful sound and relaxing nature. I played it for a week and put in on the shelf. Fast-forward to freshman year of college and I brought the kalimba with me. I had the idea of tuning the kalimba to c minor to provide an entirely different vibe from the typically tuned c major. After long days of school, I would improvise on the kalimba in my dorm room and start to learn my way around the instrument. It was then that the idea for fade came to me. Throughout the piece, both the kalimba and cajon provide melodic material as well as rhythmic foundations that allow each player to showcase their abilities on each instrument. The melodic material in the first major section of the piece is later revisited to bring the piece full circle before fading out at the end, this section being my inspiration for naming the piece. This is a high-energy, fast-paced piece that is fun to play, and technically challenging for each instrument.
