Vibraphone + Flugel Horn Duet
FlugelVibe began as joke piece-an attempt to spoof the much-beloved melody from Chuck Mangione’s 1977 song “Feels so Good.” I am a massive King of the Hill fan, and Mangione’s constant presence in the show always brings a smile to my face, along with his penchant to perform his hit song regardless of the context of the moment.
When attempting to compose with this melody in mind, I quickly hit several roadblocks and pivoted to another piece for vibraphone and melodica I had worked on in 2022. My partner Rose and I frequently jam on vibraphone and melodica together, and I credit her for the inspiration for much of the material in FlugelVibe. I switched the melodica part to flugelhorn, changed a few impossible passages, and resumed this work with new inspiration. FlugelVibe (in inspiration, content, and title) is a piece about partnership
FlugelVibe was premiered on October 13th, 2024 by BuzzRoll Duo, Alexander Sanso and Joseph Spearman, at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley.
