Marimba + Oboe Duet
Every music student knows the struggle of going through undergraduate music school.
Students are busy from 8am in the morning to 7pm at night, and that’s not counting
time for homework, projects, or practicing your principal instrument. After all of the
years of being constantly busy, there is nothing more exciting than seeing the light at
the end of the tunnel.
Free from the Critical Mass embodies the energy and relief from the feeling of getting
closer to graduating from undergraduate music school. When my friend asked me to
write a piece for his senior recital, I knew I wanted to express what he and I were both
feeling—relief. A piece full of energy and stress representing the long days we put into
our craft, and ending this work with us seeing a glowing light at the end of those long
days in the form of a diploma.
