Drumset Solo

This piece has 2 primary influences: the ‘break-beat’ drumming of Jojo Mayer and JD Beck, whose styles were influenced by electronic music, and the late, great electronic artist Sophie. While these influences intersect at various points, the work is divided into two larger sections representing each. The first half explores the fast-paced, virtuosic, and ‘ghost-note’-filled drumming of these living artists before being abruptly interrupted by the ‘ghost’ of Sophie. The rhythmic motive from her track “Ponyboy” is quoted at length in the second half of the piece while further developing earlier motives into a darker, heavier feel.
