Night Groove by Robert Clayson

Night Groove begins sedately enough with a chorale that alternates between traditional roles and double laterals. As the chorale continues, it increases in intensity before breaking out into the piece’s eponymous groove.

This piece is forceful and driving, and maintains its energy throughout most of the piece. It briefly settles back down into another chorale toward the end of the piece, before returning abruptly and aggressively to the groove. The final section of the piece is once again high-energy, and ends with a robust, satisfying finality.

Night Groove is more aggressive than most of the compositions Clayson has written, and the fact that it fits perfectly in the 4.3-octave range just makes it all the better. This piece is intended for an intermediate to advanced level performer and is a perfect choice for juries and recital programs.
