Featured Drumset + Percussion Quartet
Obliterate was written for the Eastman Percussion Ensemble at the Eastman School of Music. It is the most recent of my compositions to be heavily inspired by metal drumming and metal music in general. While generally “extreme” in nature, there are several moments of relief scattered throughout, inspired by bands such as Cynic. The drumset part demands the use of a double bass pedal throughout and requires the player to execute “blast-beats” (rapid-fire singles between cymbals and snare drum). The challenge for the performer in these moments is to not overwhelm the ensemble; to this end, amplification for the keyboard instruments may be desired. The piano part is written with the intention of being performable by a percussionist, though some prior familiarity with piano would be encouraged. The ensemble should not be timid: shred and obliterate!
