Waterways is a reflection of my first year teaching at River Bluff High School – and my first year teaching in general. This piece illustrates the joy and excitement of teaching that I have experienced, but also the challenges that come along with it.
Waterways begins with a simple melody that continues to add layer after layer, depicting a sense of hope and intimidation that I felt starting this new career. It then transforms with unbridled waves of emotions; the feeling of coming home, happiness, stress, the challenges of getting through the first week, the first semester... The piece settles back to a simple melody that continues to grow and evolve with more and more layers – finding my sense of purpose and belonging. Waterways ends how it began, with that sense of hope and intimidation, but this time beaming and pushing forward with a sense of reckless abandon.
Instrumentation (Percussion parts can can be doubled):
- Glockenspiel
- Two Vibraphones
- 4.3 Marimba (shared)
- 5.0 Marimba (shared)
- Percussion 1: Cabasa & Hi-hat
- Percussion 2: Cajon*
- Percussion 3: Multi-bass drum and low tom shell*
*These instruments may be substituted based on ensemble needs or instrument limitations
