Mesomerism by Joseph Spearman
Mesomerism is scored for snare drum, gongs, and voice, commissioned by my friend Hannah Moore for her master’s recital at The Ohio State University in the Spring of 2023.The title refers to an organic chemistry concept with two definitions: the first definition is simply “resonance,” reflected in the role of the snare drum as a resonating body. The second definition is the structural property of some molecules that a single formula cannot represent. I wanted to write a piece of music that challenges the idiom of the snare drum solo, and what emerged was a piece that constantly negotiates the boundaries between snare drum solo, multiple percussion solo, and even gong solo.Mesomerism’s reimagining of scientific theorization through sonic performance takes inspiration from the late percussionist Christopher Deane, whose works Marimba Quartet #2: Sensing the Coriolis and Almost Perpetual Torque engage, replicate, and manipulate concepts from physics.
